A metronomic rumination that summons the creatures living underground, Of the Chasm is a 22-track album filled with syncopated textures, sinister narration, and some of Chicago’s very own. As the listener digs, a parallel world is unveiled - filled with interpretations that mimic what’s above. With tracks like “And Them Things Go,” featuring Sudo Black, “From Where We From,” featuring Nappy Nina, and “No Demand But Think,” featuring Ekym1536, the album twists the traditional feel of boom bap into a gritty circus of “jukified rap.” As Azarias’s first full-length release, the album highlights his granular approach to rhythm and melody in this hour-long meditation. Triumph, resistance, and the immanence of doom lead the journey and aerate shadowy figures and their glowing verses. The heavy-hitting drums create round, earthly delight – a drummer’s dream – while grounding the remixed responses that stylize the life below.
